Plain-English Breakdown

Updates no longer “chase every change” — they stick to official releases

Previously, if you installed Hermes Agent from source, updates would follow every single commit on the development mainline (the main branch) — like binge-watching a show that drops new episodes daily. It’s fresh, sure, but sometimes you’d hit a plot point that hasn’t been polished yet.

That’s changed: updates now automatically target official release version numbers (vX.Y.Z) and only upgrade when a proper release is available. If your version is already newer than the latest official release, it’ll simply wait for the next one instead of “downgrading” you. Power users who still want to track every commit can manually switch back to the “per-commit” channel. There’s also a new toggle in the desktop app under “Settings ▸ About ▸ Updates.”

The thinking process no longer “cuts out”

When AI answers a complex question, it “thinks it through” first before speaking. This release fixes an issue where, if you used hermes chat --resume to pick up a previous conversation or moved to the next round, those earlier “thinking processes” would be lost — causing the AI to re-reason from scratch like it had amnesia.

Now that thinking content is fully preserved and replayed, so after resuming a session the AI can pick up right where its reasoning left off — no more disjointed responses. Users running Bedrock inference models benefit too: resuming sessions is no longer rejected.

Updates work smoothly behind firewalls

Some corporate or regional network firewalls block certain GitHub requests with 403 errors, causing updates to fail. Two things were done here: first, update checks no longer request the kind of records that tend to get blocked; second, if you’ve configured a GitHub token (via GITHUB_TOKEN or gh auth login), the check will include it — and if you hit a rate limit, it’ll clearly tell you “this is a rate limit” instead of giving a vague error.

Small details, big experience

  • Ctrl+C gets smarter: When you press Ctrl+C while typing a command, it clears your half-typed input first instead of immediately interrupting the running task — no more accidental interruptions.
  • Richer plugin directory: New plugins for Japanese address handling (jp-address), looot, and more, plus two code review skills: Sem and Weave.
  • Performance optimization: The fixed-prefix prompt is about 2,100 tokens smaller, making every request more resource-efficient.

Summary

v0.21.7 is a patch release that puts “stability” front and center. For regular users, the most noticeable changes are: updates are more controllable and no longer blindly chase the latest; the AI remembers its previous reasoning when you resume a conversation; and upgrades go smoothly even on complex networks. If you installed from source, you’ll automatically land on the “stable release channel” after this update — one less thing to worry about.
